Painter Choe Buk

Choe Buk was one of famous painters in the 18th century.

He was good at drawing portraits, landscapes, flowers and animals. He was so skillful in drawing landscapes that he was nicknamed “landscape painter Choe”.

Poor as he was, he liked drawing beautiful scenery of the country, but he never drew pictures pleasing the feudal ruling circles.

An anecdote tells of him. An aristocrat in authority forced him to draw pictures, but Choe refused to do so, even going blind by pricking one of his eyes.

Among his masterpieces are “Midsummer”, “Mt Kumgang”, “Phyohun Temple”, “Landscape in summer ”, “A hawk and a rabbit”, etc.
